Podkin One-Ear

Okay. So maybe my feelings are influenced by this particular time period we are in, but I went into this book thinking it had a great message, because that is what I heard.
The message I got was that it was yet another story about a spoiled male child (even if this one is a "rabbit") who is going to get to be the leader even though he does nothing and his older sister puts in all the work simply by the virtue of his maleness. In 2018, this isn't a story I want to read any more. I'm tired of it. I was also upset that the protagonist does one stand-up hero thing, and then his more competent sister is like "Oh yes you will be a great chieftain! It's all good." And you know that this story isn't going to change from that because it's told by the younger brother of the protagonist in the future where this rabbit is already a legend.
The story is also told in third person present tense, which is not a style that I generally enjoy, so that didn't help.
In fact, I would not have finished it except there's an MSBA Battle of the Books type thing happening and this is one of the selections, so if I have kids participating, I need to be familiar with it.
