How to Hide an Empire
by Daniel Immerwahr
This book is hard to write a review for. Obviously, it was excellent: I gave it 5 stars. However, I can’t say I enjoyed it.
Instead, it was frustrating to learn how shockingly ignorant I am about American history and how much my education has left out. I knew the very basics of some events, but growing up in the Pacific Northwest the attitude is generally “it happened in the past and it’s all resolved now” which is unbelievably frustrating. Reading about parts of American history from another point of view made me pretty disgusted with those who held positions of power (usually white men) during that time. So, the question is: how can we make changes and ensure the terrible parts of history don’t repeat themselves? This book doesn’t answer that, but it does serve as a start to that conversation and as stepping stone to further research each topic.
