I have never read Carrie, which this is based on, but I still found myself flipping furiously through the pages of this book. Maddy Washington is a teen in Georgia who has been passing as white, but getting caught in the rain reveals her status as half Black. The whole town (who had already been bullying her) just gets worse. Her father has been emotionally abusive. Incidents of bullying get shared on social media, and various plans happen as a result, especially related to prom, which is being integrated for the first time (and yes, this still happens). Jackson writes really interesting thrillers and mysteries, and this one might be my favorite yet.
Graphic: Bullying, Emotional abuse, Racism
Moderate: Child abuse, Cursing, Domestic abuse, Hate crime, Violence, Police brutality, Murder, Fire/Fire injury, Cultural appropriation, Gaslighting, Toxic friendship, Injury/Injury detail
