I really enjoyed The Opposite of You by Rachel Higginson. Confession: I don’t usually like books where the whole premise of the story is that they once hated each other. I feel like they are sometimes rushed, and characters go through complete personality transplants. Suddenly, things don’t make sense. Ultimately, the romance and believability suffers. However, I think Higginson executed the timing really well.

Things I liked: the build up of Vera and Killian’s relationship. They were really sweet and I’m sure that if I hadn’t learned to stifle my emotions when reading I would have been grinning through most of the book. It made me laugh out loud at times. Another thing (which I think might actually be an unpopular opinion), I liked Vera’s progression from fake it ’til you make it to confident woman. I saw some reviews saying that it felt like she was whining for most of the book, but I didn’t really feel that way. I won’t spoil it, but when you’ve been through the things that she went through it tends to stay with you and affect every decision you make in your life. I think it makes sense, and I really felt like it was quite believable.

As far as writing goes, I thought it was fine. Not especially spectacular, but the author was able to give her characters depth. I don’t think this book was taking itself too seriously, which I think is a good things. I just feel like it could have turned to cheeseball real quick.

Anyway, time to end this review. I would give The Opposite of You a 4/5 stars.
