Modern Romance by Aziz Ansari
3.0

I think I just picked this one up because of the author and I find his stand-up routines pretty funny. I was not exactly sure what kind of book this was but I quickly found out it is about exactly what the title says - romance in the modern world. I read this one in audiobook form which I helped in my enjoyment of the book. After the first several minutes where he berates you for listening to the audiobook opposed to actually reading it I found it to be a pretty interesting read. While the book focuses on the romance of the modern world he also generally speaks on how people communicate now as opposed to 20 years ago.

Overall, I liked it. Interesting concepts to think about. Instead of waiting a certain amount of days to call someone, now it is more appropriate to wait a certain amount of hours to text someone as to avoid seeming too eager. Also, how "we" assume a certain level of privacy on our phones which leads people to cheat and/or have affairs. But in the same breath he says that cheaters or going to cheat, regardless, but technology definitely does make it easier - what used to be done by meeting at remote bars or hotels, or letting the house phone ring twice then hanging up can now be done by changing a contact name.

Texts are quickly taken out of context; time between messages are taken out of context. There is a lot of wiggle room in today's communication.

All I can say is I am glad that my husband and I met and dated before now because I don't know if I could handle this new way of communicating when getting to know someone romantically.
