Rule of Three by Kelly Jamieson
3.0

Life has been a lot lately, so when I was invited to experience this book equivalent of popcorn, I hit play. For those unfamiliar, Jamieson’s Rule of Three has been adapted into a visual novel by Crazy Maple Studios’ Chapters app. I was randomly selected to win a Day Pass for this book, so I went to town.

From the outside, Kassidy has the perfect life. Her boyfriend Chris loves her, and they’ve just moved in together. Her job is going well. It’s almost a bit…boring. Their sex life is too vanilla. Enter Dag, Chris’s best friend from college, who’s back in Chicago and eager to re-connect with his old friend after ghosting him years ago. When Kassidy and Dag lock eyes, sparks fly, and Chris blurts out that he and Dag used to have threesomes during university. The three of them tumble into bed together. You know where this is going.

The plot of Rule of Three is entirely color by number, and that’s not a bad thing. It was soothing and fun and made me laugh. In fact, there’s little plot or character building to be had. All is sacrificed on the altar of hot, hot mattress mambo. What does Dag do? IDK phone app stuff! What does Chris do? Business things!!! As a character, Chris suffers the most—he’s more blonde cardboard cut out than person. But who cares, because Jamieson doesn’t leave anyone wanting in the bedroom department. I thought such sex fests were limited to fanfiction, but boy, I’ve never been more happy to be incorrect.

If you’re in the mood for hot threesomes and little else, pick up Rule of Three. The Chapters adaptation will nickel and dime ya for the sex scenes. Even that has its fun, as Kassidy will comment on the forbidden, non-normative nature of her relationships when all they’ve done is cuddle.
