My Sweet Orange Tree by José Mauro de Vasconcelos
4.0

My Sweet Orange Tree was first published in 1968 and based on speculation it is said that the protagonist was based on the author himself. Written originally in Portuguese, this book has remained a timeless classic ever since.

This book feels like heartbreak. There's a five year old boy, Zezé who lives in Rio de Janeiro with his family and they're all very poor. As kids often do, Zezé too has a streak of mischief in his nature but is punished severely for his antics. He feels lonely and is absolutely alone amidst his family except for his sister Gloria who gives him all her love. When the family moves into a smaller house to save money, Zezé finds a sweet orange tree in the backyard and makes friends with it. Because all Zezé wants is to make friends.

There's also an unexpected friendship that blooms in the book although it did last for just a brief moment, my heart was so so full! You feel yourself rooting for this kid who with his tiny hands carries a shoe box to earn a few coins. He looks at his brother with an adoration that melts hearts into a puddle. This book offers a lot even though it is categorised under children's genre. Children view this world without a hint of judgement and want simple assurances that they shall be loved to lead a happy life. And as adults, we sometimes fail to hand these over to them.

I sometimes wish to be a child again so that I can embrace life the way it is rather than pondering on everything that has been missing.

This book is simply beautiful but it also leaves you sad. The sadness is worth the other lovely messages this book has to offer and I'd recommend this very strongly.

Thanks to my dearest husband @whats.inna.name for gifting this book to me. You're my sweet
