This was the book that I was most anticipating this year. It’s quite interesting that this is probably going to be my last book of the year. I was really nervous to pick this up though because the reviews were not what I was expecting. It’s not what the reviews weren’t positive, it’s just that everyone seemed to be disappointed. I was scared that I was going to be disappointed as well. And I never - NEVER - want to be disappointed with Stephanie Perkins because…Stephanie Perkins. Well, thank the book gods because I wasn’t disappointed in this book at all. But, it was different. This book wasn’t perfect but I was able to look past imperfections and see the book for it’s beauty.
I played a weird game of tug of war trying to decide if I liked the romance in this book. One of the reasons I love the way Stephanie Perkins writes romance is because she lets it develop. She lets it boil on the stove like a kettle right up to the point where it’s about the whistle. This book, however, was different. The romance in this book moved REALLY quickly. I did not like how quickly it moved. I barely know the characters, I was not really ready to follow a romance. Even though the speed of the romance had me annoyed, I couldn’t help but fall into the pool of cute because …Stephanie Perkins. Gah. It was pretty bad. I squealed quite a few times. It wasn’t what I loved from the other two books but, you know… Stephanie Perkins.
Let’s talk about the characters in this book! We should start with Isla because …this book is kind of about her, yeah? Isla was a really interesting character. Most of the book, I really like her. But for some of the book, Isla was interesting. By reading the back of the book, we all know that Isla has a big crush on Josh. At times, in my opinion, her crush was a little bit obsessive. There were some things that she did that I’m pretty sure everyone does but others were…interesting XD But like I said, most of the time I enjoyed her a lot.
Josh was an interesting character as well. Because the romance moved along so quickly, I felt like we didn’t really know him until the middle of the book. That kind of bothered me because I really hate it when a love interest is kind of just..there. Also, at points, I thought Josh could be kind of possessive of Isla. It would come out of no where at odd points and it kind of just bothered me. Overall though, I liked Josh. He wasn’t perfect, but I liked him. In my opinion, though, he doesn’t compare to the other two boys.
One aspect of the book that I was not expecting was Isla’s relationship with her friend Kurt. I really loved their relationship. I feel like recently, books have been missing the mark with friendships for me. This one did not let me down.
There is a scene is this book where everyone - people from past books - make an appearance. I’m not going to give anything away but THIS SCENE. I fell onto the floor and rolled around my floor while squealing for about five minutes. STEPHANIE FREAKING PERKINS.
The end of this book was the problem many other people have with this book, but, I was satisfied. This book wasn’t exactly like the other two, but I enjoyed it as an overall. Stephanie Perkins is still wonderful <3
