Review

It's really difficult to review this book, 1 because of the subject matter and 2 because of the narration.

The story is narrated by a 5 year old little boy called Jack.
He lives in 'Room' with 'Ma' this is the only place he has ever known as he was born there.

Room is 11ft by 11ft with a bath, cooker a bed, a wardrobe all of the creature comforts you would ever want and Jack is happy!

Ma is not happy.....

Ma was kidnapped at the age of 19 and put into the room and has not been able to leave for 7 years!

Jack has lots of friends, he has Bed, Wardrobe, Plant, Egg Snake and Dora in TV.

Because the whole story is told from Jacks POV you never really understand everything that is happening in Room but you can feel it.

You can feel it when they look at 'Watch' and it is 8.47pm and he runs into 'Wardrobe' to his bed so that he isn't there when 'Old Nick' comes in at 9pm....

You can feel it when he counts the grunts until it goes quiet and Old Nick leaves...

You can feel it when Jack speaks about people in TV not being really real, and 'Outside' is outer space ......

The narration is hard at first, and I felt guilty about being a bit fed up with it after a few chapters, it started to grate my nerves, but after that I understood why it was done like that.

A good but difficult read.
