Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
3.0

i loved the idea and the setting and plot but the writing felt flat to me and kept everything at a distance so that i just didn’t get a feel for the story or cared what happens to the characters.

i loved the idea of combining mayan mythology and history together with fantasy and then setting it during 1925.
it sounded fantastic to me!

and i am not sure if this book felt a bit too distant to me because i just don’t know enough about the culture and place and it’s people, that i know too little about mexico let alone mexico during the time this book is set in.
or if the book is just written in a way that keeps the reader at a clear distance.

it might be both.

but that didn’t really work for me.
i love connecting with characters.
i want to feel for them and with them.
i want to cheer them on and be part of their races and fights, feel their loses and wins. feel sad when things don’t work out or happy when they do.
those things make my reading! i want to sink into a book.
i want to live it.

maybe that’s my own problem and not every book can deliver that but this book had it all that was needed... expect where it actually let the reader feel the characters since those just didn’t feel real i how they were written.

that all being said it’s a good book.
it’s a great fantasy, action packed and adventures with a hint for lost things and a main female character that just wants to be able to do was she pleases instead of having to listen to her male relatives as if she is a servant.

i hope the authors writing will grow and let the reader in more in the next book.
because i enjoyed the ideas so very much in this book and wish i could have enjoyed the reading experience more.
