This is one of the best books I have read this year. Thrilling, intelligent, atmospheric, political and so gripping I struggled to put it down. 

The Tethered Mage (the first book in the trilogy) was excellent, full of the court intrigue I love and with great characters - I gave it five stars. The Defiant Heir was considerably better. I adored every moment of it.
