I was so completely gripped by this children's fantasy novel that I just could not put it down. I absolutely adored it.
The book revolves around Amari, a 12-year-old Black girl who is desperate to find out what happened to her missing brother. She discovers that he was secretly working for the Bureau of Supernatural Affairs, and she accepts an invitation to try out for the Bureau herself. In the process she befriends a weredragon and realises that she herself may have some unusual powers.
The book was faintly reminiscent of the Nevermoor series by Jessica Townsend, which is certainly not a bad thing as Nevermoor is one of the best kids series of recent years. (It also at times brought to mind the Men in Black movies with its descriptions of a myriad of different creatures living disguised in plain sight and an agency to oversee them.) There's much more to this novel than just a retread of familiar storylines though. The characters were written fabulously, and the plot was full of twists and turns, some of which I did not see coming.
The cover illustration by Brittany Jackson is stunning.
Overall this is just such a fun, magical story that kids are going to love!
