This book was very good, but I think maybe my expectations were a little too high. It was incredibly well written but never blew me away.

Evelyn is such a beautifully complex character and even though she definitely did some immoral things, I do feel like I understand her.

My biggest problem is the “twist,” because to me it was very obvious (and I don’t consider myself particularly clever). The book itself builds up that there’s going to be a twist several times. By the time it’s revealed it’s literally the only thing that makes sense, making it obvious. I think alluding to the twist also made the second part of the book drag a little because instead of engaging with the story I was just waiting for the shoe to drop.

I know a lot of people said they cried reading this, but I never felt that emotionally connected.
