Frankenstein
by Mary Shelley
I read Frankenstein when I was 17 and then wrote an essay titled "How monsters are made" about it but tediously longer than that.
I no longer have a copy of that essay, because I brunt holes in it for some reason. I have that. Also, I had to memorise that essay and then re-write it out for some reason in exam settings. They no longer make the students do that anymore.
I remember having a negative feeling towards the novel when reading it, but as I got older and learnt more about Shelley and how this book was written, I appreciated it more. I originally I had doubts that Shelley was either trying to make a point but the Creature does more than Victor Frankenstein as a father.
I remember why I initially felt that way. I really dislike the Drama Queen that is Victor Frankenstein. If you take him at face value as the intended hero, then there's not much to like about this book. Even appreciate the point of this novel, we do spend a lot of time with him and it's just not great. I still thinking maybe he's Bipolar. He made the Creature in a manic episode and then had a depressive one as soon as he was finished. Maybe that's being too generous, but maybe there's a retelling in that idea. Either way, he would still be a bit of a dick.
Also, this novel is told like a game of Telephone. Its a random English sailor writing a letter to his sister about what this guy Frankenstein told him, mixed with Frankenstein retelling what the Creature told him. It means that most of the characters are not that developed. Elisabeth and Henry are both are interesting as white bread. Bias towards all the characters. That English Sailor is basically in love with Frankenstein.
Also, Henry wanted to be a colonizer. How English of him (I know he's not English). There's some questionable stuff that has aged poorly.
I have like 2 adaptions ideas now. A short film, maybe a novel in someone else point of view.
