Lord of the Flies
by William Golding
Lord of the Flies has been on my TBR for quite some time, but I've only just gotten around to reading it. I went into it a bit unsure what exactly it was about, but I did know that it was an adventure story. An adventure story it was.
I enjoyed reading this book, although it was a bit slow going for me. It took me awhile to get used to the childish British language that was used in the dialogue. The overall story was entertaining, but the heart of this book was the characters.
From the beginning of the book I could tell that there were going to be characters I'd root for, and those that I didn't. I really liked Piggy and Simon. I liked Piggy for his intelligent and clear ways of thinking while everyone else was pure chaos. I liked Simon for his innocence. Simon's character becomes gradually more interesting as the story progresses, which I liked. Ralph and Jack were the two characters that I didn't really care for. Both ended up growing on me as I read, but I just didn't like them as people.
My favorite section of the book would have to have been the middle to end. The most happened in this part, and the story became truly entertaining for me there, whereas the beginning was a bit slow for me. I did feel though, that the ending was a little rushed. I would have loved to have had more time spent there, instead of ending where the book did. (Sorry if this paragraph doesn't make the most sense. I'm trying to explain my feelings without the use of spoilers!)
Overall, Lord of the Flies was enjoyable, but not one of my favorite books. I was entertained, but the slow parts really affected my opinion on the book. With that being said, I did like it!
