blairconrad 's review for:
A Town Called Solace
by Mary Lawson
I found myself interested in the story, and specifically Liam and Moses's arcs, but ultimately a few things about the writing bothered me. The jumping-around-in-time made sense for Mrs. Orchard, but I'm not sure the Clara/Liam jumps were cut in the places that made the most sense, but this is fairly minor.
The characters were the bigger stone in my shoe. At first I thought Ms. Lawson didn't understand (or just had a very dim view of) men, with Liam being nearly one-dimensional in his distrust of trees and terrible attitude toward women, but given how he ultimately interacted with two women (and especially how they were written to serve his emotional needs and development), I'm torn between that and her just not liking people. In general, I found most of the characters could've used a little more depth or attention.
And I'm not saying the end was particularly unrealistic, but it did seem abrupt, and I did not care for it...
