I feel kind of bad not liking this book more than I did considering what it was suppose to be about. But honestly the two main characters (Claire and Forrest) were almost completely unlikeable. In fact, most of the characters in this book were insufferable, save for Rico. Even the PR assistance whose name escapes me was like of sneaky and had her own agenda and seemed to set Claire up to do something she lacked the guts to do herself. Forrest was too narrow minded, Claire was too pushy, and I agree with the statements that this paints the entirety of fandom in a negative light.
It started off promising but once Claire became more combative and determined to make her fanfiction cannon is when it fell off the tracks for me. I believe in representation for everyone, but I don’t agree with forcing the creator to do something with their characters that they don’t want to or that fanfiction needs to always be cannon. That being said, it is also on the creator to not put in seeds or hope rather of something developing if they have no intention of going through with it, since that type of ‘baiting’ is terrible on all the levels. So yeah even the creator was a jackass too but at least it was obvious that he was from the beginning.
I clearly was invested enough to finish, and I appreciated how it didn’t end in a typical Hollywood ending where everyone was happy, although I wish that Claire had been held to more accountability than she was. There were threads that dangled that didn’t need to be, and it ultimately was a bit of a rushed ending. Overall it was somewhat entertaining but incited too much annoyance in me to be truly enjoyable.
