This review is not just of the manga adaptation (of which I have so far only read vol 1), but also of the anime and light novels (I have only read those from the point at which the anime currently leaves off).
One thing I can't tell you in this review is to ignore the title. It tells you exactly what happens: the main character is reincarnated as a slime. What is likely to be a surprise is where the story goes from there. This is, in fact, a political fantasy.
From early on, Rimuru becomes leader of a group of people, gradually becoming ruler of an entire nation and forging links with other countries (while occasionally getting into conflicts and outright wars). There's diplomacy, trade and seriously so many scenes that are just meetings - but they're more than balanced by action, adventure and full scale battles.
This is not to say that this is dark or serious, complex political intrigue. The title gives away another aspect of the story - it's just plain fun. In fact, I'd describe this as pure wish fulfilment writing. The MC starts off as an everyday person, gets Isakei'd to another world, gains magic powers and very quickly grows in power both politically and magically (it's a progression fantasy). There are obstacles to overcome but you never doubt the outcome.
It's very entertaining both to read and watch. There are loveable characters and a huge amount of effort put into worldbuilding, especially as you get further into the series. I genuinely had a fabulous time bingeing the story (and now have to wait for the next LN to be released in English).
Because the title could make you think of children's stories, I need to confirm that this is not one; the intended audience is older teens and adults. It's not that the content is necessarily inappropriate btw... well, maybe the occasional fixation on women's boobs isn't great, and is particularly annoying considering the MC is genderless and asexual.
If you search online for Isekai recommendations lists, honestly Slime will probably be on every list you find. It's trope-filled and ticks every Isekai box, but it does it very well. I had so much fun.
