Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood
by Marjane Satrapi
4/5 (physical book)
This is an emotional and real telling of the war that happened in Iran. Marjane Satrapi's graphic novel memoir is beautifully written and accompanied by intricate illustrations.
I have been wanting to read Persepolis for many years now, and I am glad I finally picked it up. I learned many new facts and stories about the war in Iran and how the people were treated.
Satrapi writes her story in such a way that makes it appropriate for middle grade and young adult readers. The story can become graphic at certain points, but they are important parts of her story and make the reader understand the true tragedies and trauma these individuals faced.
The writing was a little choppy for my liking at certain points, but I think most of this has to do with the fact that I have not read many graphic novels and the story is written for younger audience. I also wanted more out of the ending, but I guess I will have to pick up book 2 to find out more!
