I took my time reading this book. What times they lived in! It was heartening to read that while the great evil slavery was rampant and even accepted, there were those who meant as much to their owners as their own flesh and blood, or more, perhaps. Scarlett O’Hara is certainly not your typical heroine; she’s got such cruel streaks of selfishness, ruthlessness and plain spitefulness that I’m shocked. Still, I wish that the ending had been happier. I wish that she had recognised her mistakes earlier, that she had corrected herself earlier - oh well, I close this book with regrets - for Bonnie, for Rhett, for Melanie, for Ashley, and above all, for Scarlett. My only complaint - the novel is too long.
