As per usual, Sharon M Draper's book opened my mind to something I thought I knew about. Not only did this book address issues in the 1930's that I knew about, but it also gave me more information and insight to the topic. Stella is a wonderful narrator, because she's strong, but still has her weak moments. It also saddens me that there are still some people out there who are racist and discriminate against others, but I have to remind myself that there are those who treat everyone equally, and we shouldn't discount that. Stella by Starlight isn't just a story about a young girl in the racist south, it's a story about family, friendship, community and standing up (or sitting down) for what you believe is right.
