I always love a solid Black horror that combines the spookiness of ghosts with the spookiness of racism! WHEN THE RECKONING COMES by LaTanya McQueen features some absolutely stunning writing and haunting passages that sometimes evokes the clarity and preciseness of Toni Morrison. You know that feeling when reading a Morrison passage where you have to reread it just to appreciate it again? Yeah, that was me during certain passages in this book. The interludes in WHEN THE RECKONING COMES acknowledge and pay respect to the bravery and resilience of those enslaved, and the gore is descriptive yet reverent. I’ll definitely be reading more from this author in the future.
