"And suddenly I realize the difference between me and my colleagues. I was ahead of them the whole time... Maybe they were just too immature to see what seemed utterly obvious to me?"

The basic plot is the main character works in a mundane office but starts going into this room between the recycling bins and the bathroom that everyone insists is not there.

At first I was like "oh my god this main character is the most unlikable person I've ever read this is awful!" 

But then I was like "oh my god this main character is the most unlikable person I've ever read this is incredible!" 

This is one of the most in-depth character studies of a narcissistic person I have ever seen. American Psycho level. The way he thinks and views the world and speaks, he believes every single thing that any person does is a power play and transactional and sees himself as always ahead of/above everyone else. Hence, them not seeing the door is just another instance of them not being on his level.

But then on top of that, the way the office reacts to him is horrible and cruel and the higher ups see him as just an asset because he's doing great work and they don't care what he's doing outside of that.

He even goes to see a psychiatrist and the psychiatrist tells him he thinks he's fine and he's just putting on an act. 

So his mental illness is harming himself and the people around him but it's either ridiculed or dismissed entirely instead of actually helped in any way. 

 
In the end he ends up "trapped in the wall" where he's been imagining the room with the last line "They'll never find me here." 

Signifying, in my opinion, that he is too far gone to be helped at this point 

I looked up the author and read interviews of his and he is an actor and playwright, so he's very skilled at character work and writing as if he were actually in their head. You can see this in how well he writes this unreliable, unlikable, but deeply complex character.
