Ahh I loved this book, I picked it up about a year ago and DNF it, I didn't like it and got bored, but I tried again with a buddy read and loved it.
(Thanks Ezi :•D )
Emma is living with her aunt (Carol) and uncle (George) as her father died and her mother turned to alcohol and couldn't look after her.
She is an above average student with excellent results, and a brilliant sports person, so much so that she has coaches coming to watch her from other universities to snap her up.
Her best friend Sara is the most popular girl in the school, and she is also being crushed on by a gorgeous new guy in her classes that all the girls are swooning over.
So why is she not happy?
Why does she not want to be noticed by anyone?
Why does she not have any other friends.
Why does she wear long sleeved baggy clothes all year round?
CAROL
Emma can do no right by Carol, whether that is not doing her chores properly or just breathing.
She calls her "a worthless piece of shit" and will hit her with anything she has to hand....laundry detergent.....hands. ...leather belt......BASEBALL BAT.......KNIFE...!!
The list is endless, poor Emma has to endure this from her bitch of an aunt on a daily basis until she can get out of the house and go to Uni.
I genuinely have never loathed a character more!
Now I'm sure you are wondering as i was, Why doesn't Emma just say something??
Well, not only does Emma live in the house but her 2 little cousins do too, they are still so young and Emma doesn't want them to be taken into care and away from their parents, so she just puts up with it and counts down the days till she can leave.
Now, just as Emma is plodding along with her life quite happily thank you very much, Evan Matthews sneaks in, he slowly gets to know her and gains her trust (although not all of it)
Although she really likes him she will only let them be friends as she doesn't want him to find out about her home life, no one knows about her home life. ....only Sarah.
Sara is a lovely character, I was angry with her at first for not saying anything to anyone, but then realised that she was doing this for Emmas sake.
She looks after her, pampers her and genuinely loves Emma, she is a great best friend.
This book had lots of emotions for me, genuine gushiness, swooning, and gasps of horror!
And ending ...THE ENDING !!!!
Let's just say that my Audible credit is one less this month!!
