What Light by Jay Asher
2.0

I’m very disappointed in this book. I had higher expectations than what I was given.

From a man that’s written 2 or 3 books before this one, I was expecting more. And not to say my expectations were off the roof high, but I didn’t get what I wanted.

We follow a girl (which I can’t remember her name) and she lives in California where her family owns a Christmas tree farm and goes to Oregon every holidays to sell her Christmas trees from the farm. In Oregon she meets a boy called Caleb and they have a holiday romance.

Which is fine. I like the premise of this book. I picked it up, 1. Because I’ve heard nothing but great things, 2. Because Jay Asher is a critically acclaimed author, and 3. Because it was really cheap at my local thrift store and 4. Because the cover

But this read like EVERY OTHER YA HOLIDAY ROMANCE. It had literally NO SUBSTANCE. It was so bland and something I definitely didn’t expect from an author with nothing but rave reviews.

Also, I HATE Jay Asher’s writing style. Idk what it is, but I can’t deal with it. The only character I thought was good in this story was Caleb, and even then his motives behind his dark past are kinda stupid. He clearly needs some mental healthcare.

Overall this book is just really a bore and nothing really happens, and it’s just to simple for me. I wish there was something else their and maybe I would have liked it more, but alas, I didn’t.
