I've liked Ahnna since the start of the series, she's level headed, strong and loyal to her people over her own heart, something her brother isn't too great with.
James is her perfect match and I like the way they meet, the case of mistaken identity for both being a trope I've always quite enjoyed. He's the type of prince you'd want on a throne, working hard to make sure his people are cared for and doing what's best for them.
And I like the King. Eddie is an interesting kind of political figurehead, he seems much more human than some real life leaders and I enjoyed that about him.
Atmosphere: 9
Ooooh it was weird hearing British accents in this one. I did love the world building though, it's getting better by the book which is encouraging. There was also lots of rumour and misinformation going on in the background that made for a much more tense read than the others.
Writing Style: 7
I definitely enjoy Jensen's writing more when I actually like the characters, that's become pretty obvious. And I think the way some of the plot twists are written have improved throughout the series as well, with some of them being foreseeable, some being half-expected but a little unusual and a couple just being totally out of left field.
Plot: 8
Although there are still some physical fights in this one, it's much more about the political battles and backstabbing going on behind closed doors which I really enjoyed. I like being at court I guess.
Intrigue: 10
The cliff-hanger this one ended with while the next book isn't yet finished kind of kills me. I genuinely don't know how their going to fix things and tie up the loose ends and I really want to.
Logic/Relationships: 10
The banter between Ahnna and James is perfection, the absolute yearning going on is what I live for in a romance novel and the way they both handle it is believable and heartwrenching.
The royal family's bonds are also interesting, with a slightly broken dynamic caused by grief, jealousy and in some respects fear. Although some characters' actions are surprising at some points, in no way are they unbelievable for them.
Entertainment: 9
This one was a little slow to get into story-wise, focusing in parts on rounding off the previous books, but once I got into it, I couldn't really stop listening to it.
