i don’t have much to say about this simply because it was so phenomenal words escape me. like i truly think this is one of those books you kind of have to read to get what it’s about. because yeah i can water my explanation down to “bates describes all different types of alt-right misogynists, how the issue isn’t just relegated to online spaces and is straight up terrorism at times, and she offers practical solutions to stop this trend” but like. that completely misses the point. it misses her debunking almost all of the alt-right’s male-centric statistics. it misses her outright explaining how and why this trend of men who hate women literally is killing people, and it misses how policy makers overlook it because misogyny is so normalised. it misses why half those spaces are also all other types of -phobic. it misses the critical analyses from sociologists and other academics analysing this issue. but what an explanation of this book will really miss is just how sobering yet necessary this book.
honestly i think from now on this is going to be my go-to nonfiction recommendation. it’s a hard read, it’s very content heavy, and it’s horrifying, but it’s so fucking good.
