The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness
by Michelle Alexander
Rather than write a traditional review, I will just vehemently encourage everyone to read The New Jim Crow. The tenth anniversary edition has a fabulous/scary preface detailing the changes and lack there of that the US has seen (or not) in intervening years. If you live in a predominantly white neighborhood or otherwise have no experience with the justice system— you can likely learn quite a bit. It’s not just the jarring statistics that outline the myriad ways that the federal system is rather unjust, regarding prison quotas and glaring prejudice in policing, but also the personal stories included that point to how little has changed legally or within society itself since reconstruction. Unfortunately now as it was then, to be Black is to live daily facing odds that are not likely in your favor. Hopefully having more eyes on books like these and hearts with a growing movement for BLM and beyond will continue to spark change within ourselves and our communities which can radiate outward into true and lasting personal and legal reforms.
