This is a very character-centric space opera, with plenty of politics, interesting worldbuilding and a central romance. (I would personally describe it as a sci-fi with romance in it as opposed to an actual romance novel, though there are certainly elements which will appeal to romance fans.)
There is a lot of miscommunication in the book, which is a trope I don't tend to like, but it at least felt realistic here, with two characters who don't know each other being forced into a diplomatic marriage. One character is also dealing with events from his past - you may wish to check the content warnings before reading.
I enjoyed the story a lot and will definitely check out future writing by Everina Maxwell.
