The Hunting Moon
by Susan Dennard
This was kind of the perfect length—but because I was having fun I wish it was longer. I like that this series is younger YA; while Winnie is 16 she feels actually her age and therefore I think this is great for a 13-16 range for YA which is harder to find these days! The plot keeps you intrigued, and I liked how we built Winnie and Jay’s relationship out from what was done in book one already. I thought we’d solve more mysteries from book one but it’s kept me pretty interested to see where the story goes next. I think my only complaint is how repetitive and show-y the writing was at times—Winnie’s glasses are literally a character in this book I stg. At the same time, I do think the writing feels really accessible, especially for a YA audience, I just wish it was a liiittle more balanced. I enjoyed this book delving into the trauma of the Luminaries, questioning their culture, and the focus on Winnie navigating it all and growing as a person. Definitely a great YA paranormal/contemporary fantasy series that does a good job keeping a shorter page count and staying fun for younger YA readers.
