Every Heart a Doorway
by Seanan McGuire
— 3.5* stars —
Every Heart a Doorway is an intriguing, compelling, fast read.
At first, I was afraid I was not going to like the story very much. The first couple of chapters were not as gripping as I thought it would be, and it was not as I was expected it. But I was curious enough to continue it. And as the story went on, I got way more interested.
I enjoyed reading about the characters, all having this little thing that makes them special, and kind of reflects the world they've been in. Jack and Jill were among my favorites. If at times, some of the characters felt a bit one-dimensional, I'm still very curious about them and want to know more of their backstories and the worlds they fell into, before ending up in the Wayward House. The mystery aspect of it was also something I liked.
It was a fairly short book (under 200 pages), and I feel like if the beginning dragged a little, the ending happened too fast. I was somehow surprised by the plot-twist and how it ended, but I guess this is also why I'm looking forward to reading the second book in the series.
In a short amount of pages, it encapsulated so much, and was packed with elements like magic and mystery and other worlds, that I just need more of it, because it felt tooshort.
The concept is captivating and unique, and I'm definitely thinking about reading the sequel to this one.
My pick for the Ancient Runes class - Heart rune: heart on the cover or in the title
