Anouk is a papered bratty teenager. She is chosen for a special assignment in France. She is going to be one of the first people in a secret underground palace France. Her parents think she is jetting of to Azerbaijan. Needless to say, she doesn’t have a great relationship with her parents.
At the airport she meets the rest of the crew: Jules the tall lanky guy, Lily who never shuts up, Will, the strong silent type, and Hayden, the rich party boy. They know not why they were chosen, but each already has, or spent a month gaining the skills they would need for this once in a lifetime experience.
This book has two stories. The second story takes place in 1789 France during the revolution. The people are fed up with the aristocracy and are invading their homes, killing the inhabitants, and placing their heads on pikes. One man has been preparing for this. He has built his “butterfly palace” underground where no one can get to him or his family. We know this story through his daughter Aurelie. She knows her mother is afraid to go underground, but she must save both her mother and her sisters, if she can.
The premise of this story is amazing, and it could have gone so far, but it failed miserably. I would not classify it as horror, or thriller, or fantasy. I would classify it as useless. Admittedly, it was interesting enough to keep me reading, but it wrapped up way too quickly, and way too easily. This book feels a like the movies Ghost Ship, 13 Ghosts, and the cave all rolled into one. But they were not as successful. The biggest reason for the low rating is that things are not cleared up in the end. There are too many big questions that never got answered like what happened to Aurelie, why did her father Frederick build the rooms like he did? Plus many more I don’t want to mention because it would give too much away. I think this author needed a little mentoring from Stephen King or Joe Hill, and he would have a book to knock our socks off. I know he has it in him. The wire scene alone… More of that please. Less of what there is.
