These Violent Delights
by Chloe Gong
Trigger warning for anyone who suffers from entomophobia (the fear of insects).
A cat and mouse mystery that takes the reader on a journey through 1920's Shanghai and it's dark underground gangs. Although this story is inspired by Romeo and Juliet it definitely holds it's own and sets itself apart from the original material.
It is very much centred on the mystery of a sickness that is killing the local population and the two heirs to rival gangs searching for answers, rather than being centred on the love story aspect, which I appreciated.
I did want a little more from the characters though, the focus was mainly given to the twists and turns rather than the character's and I wanted to feel a little more for them. The more interesting characters weren't the main characters.
Perfect for those who love dark and gritty female characters and remorseful broody male characters. I look forward to the sequel and seeing how it will all end.
