The Weight of Our Sky by Hanna Alkaf
4.0

This book covers the race riots of Kuala Lumpur in 1969 through the eyes of a teen. I was not familiar with these race riots, and while they are unique, there is something universal about the "different/other=bad" mentality that seems to go among all humans. In this case, it's Malay vs. Chinese as the dominant conflict, with some other differences (most notably Indian) getting involved. Complicating getting caught in the riots is the protagonist's OCD, which she sees as a djinn that she must keep happy in order to keep her loved ones alive. It was interesting to read about how people dealt with mental illness before it was really understood. I also think it's relatable that the narrator isn't perfect in how she reacts, which is so much more realistic than someone who knows the right things to do.
