Sissy: A Coming-of-Gender Story
by Jacob Tobia
I perpetually rate memoirs higher if the writing (and especially the audiobook format) makes it feel more like a conversation between friends than a one-sided venting, and though I haven't been able to talk back to Jacob directly, their words made it feel very much like I got to know their history from all that was presented here. Though it took many years of getting to know themself, Jacob did eventually get behind the give-no-f*cks attitude that allowed them to more fully embrace what it means to be Jacob, which from my perspective means a pretty fabulous, sparkly person who often straps on heels that could kill. If I ever meet you Jacob I want to either give you a bear hug, get your autograph on your book, buy you a drink, and/or bond over shoe shopping—or some combination of all of the above.
The ending especially, no spoilers, where Jacob addressed how though they didn't hold back from sharing the hardest moments between Jacob and their parents, Jacob did so because it was important to not lie about the worst that came from either Jacob or Jacob's father. Some parts are honest and don't show Jacob in the best light, but that's okay because it's so much better to be truthful in this case so that other young people grappling with their own identities will be able to see how even if their situations right now aren't so good, Jacob is a good example of how much good can happen if you can make it through to the other side.
