I don't think I understand the meaning of the sentence "this concedes nothing to modernism..." (to paraphrase). All the houses look like modernist businesses to me. However the architects/authors did convey appreciation for Maine. I live here and have seen some beautiful old houses...it was interesting to see the interiors of the expensive newer ones, even if a few of the ones in this book are somewhat ugly on the outside and alienating inside.
