I'm sorry I strongly disliked this. Objectively, this is a good book. Objectively, Jean can write. I was giving this book the benefit of the doubt for a while despite not entirely vibing with Jean's writing style personally. I can't exactly pin-point what felt off to me but the pacing and word choice wasn't up my ally, to say the least. Some parts of this story just dragged and felt like I was pulling teeth with at-home, rusty pliers to get through it. The premise is interesting enough so I figured I'd stick through it and see what the big twist is and I'm mad I did. Stupid ASF twist.

I can't displace my realistic expectations to a degree when it comes to mystery-thrillers, and maybe I've read too many in a short amount of time where I had to do that, but this was so entirely unrealistic to me... And the way these characters interacted with each other made me want to crawl out of my skin. I think the most realistic aspect of this novel was the detective being annoying as fuck towards Ellie. Or really, everybody being annoying as fuck towards Ellie.

This girl just went through all kinds of hell, making her relive her trauma ten fold, and your mad that she doesn't want to speak to you anymore? Your mad that she doesn't want to help you uncover the case? I GET IT, but the insensitivity was making me roll my eyes, LMAO.

Oh well.
