I’m rating based solely on my personal enjoyment and not the story actually told.

I think it was such an interesting choice to write an autobiography in a fictional format. The first two thirds were deeply compelling and moving with a consistent pace, but I did feel like the last third was rushed and surface level in comparison to the first two thirds. However, Angelou’s prose is stunning and I loved the way she chose to convey her upbringing. I will most likely be picking up the rest of the books in her autobiographical series. She brings attention to so many topics in a deeply humanizing way (of course because they’re her experiences) and I feel like this is a deeply important autobiography to read.
