I liked some parts of this but overall I was really left wanting for more. Interesting ideas, I learned a lot about the dynamics of the Chinese community in Brunei, but I just really thought the writing was heavy-handed where it didn't need to be. Interesting threads that could have been explored more. I think the narrator maybe took a lot away for me. I don't want to rate this so low but I just think it could be so much better, especially as a Canada reads finalist.
