It's Kind of a Funny Story
by Ned Vizzini
Inspired by the author's own psychiatric stay after reaching out for help, this book shows how depression can grab you and drag you down and make you feel like you are worthless and have no other option than to kill yourself. It also shows who to reach out to and how.
I love the author's use of Anchors and Tentacles. It very much feels like that when dealing with anxiety and depression. I've begun to identify my own anchors while reading this book. I also like how the patients that are there with Craig at the time of his stay interact with him and each other. It shows that even those of us with "problems" have worth and value.
I couldn't help but be saddened by the end of this book, just because I knew going into it what happened to the author. I wish he had been able to fight his demons and come out on top. I'm grateful that he was able to leave behind this work to show others how to get the help they need, and I hope, someday to break the stigma.
