This is tough subject matter. The main character is 14, ID definitely say older middle grade or even ya. This is difficult to read and does not hide from the tragedies of war. Civilian women, children and babies are killed. Well worth reading as the character grows and matures by the end and realizes that soldiers are not only soldiers. I hope my children will read Gratz’s books when they are old enough.
