Shades of Wicked by Jeaniene Frost
4.0

It has been quite a while since I enjoyed a Jeaniene Frost book so much, I think it helped that it has been a while since I read one in general. Shades of Wicked seemed to change up much of the expectations I had with previous Frost books and the Night Huntress series in general.

Shades of Wicked follows the story of Ian, who has appeared as a secondary character throughout much of the Night Huntress series. There are a lot of allusions to various plot lines between the main Night Huntress series and Vlad's spin-off, so I would not recommend going into this one without reading those. The story-line is about Ian's deal with a demon and the law-guardian Veritas and how the two form a partnership. There was lots of tongue and cheek as always. I feel like I hadn't liked Ian's character as much until I read this series and I very much enjoyed that.

The two MCs Ian and Veritas had lots of characteristics to like about them, and I really enjoyed how Frost developed their characters over the story. She kept dropping in small snippets of information across the whole book that built up their characters and developed their relationship more. I really enjoyed the dynamic between the two as Ian came across as the original bad-boy, wild-child who was reckless, cheeky and very dirty. Then you had Veritas who was seemingly more uptight, controlled and reserved. The contrast between the two characters really drove the narrative of the book and I enjoyed that immensely.

I'm annoyed the next book isn't out until 2020, but I will definitely be reading it once it makes an appearance!
