The Phantom Tollbooth
by Norton Juster
Has any author ever had as much fun writing a book as Norton Juster had writing the Phantom Tollbooth? It's filled to the brim with indulgent wordplay. The story itself is a sort of wonderland tale, a picaresque. Each vignette of fantasyland adventure young Milo (who, frankly, seems to be suffering from depression at the beginning of the book) is a setup for more punning wisdom and commentary. This isn't a book that will work for everyone, but it'll work like magic for those who need it and don't feel too jostled by the pinball plot as Milo and his new friends complete their quest.
