Dreamland by Sarah Dessen
5.0

This is probably the most emotionally draining of Dessen's novels that I've read so far. It's also one of the best. There is a possible trigger with some abusive behavior, so if that's something that bothers you, tread carefully.

Caitlin has always felt shadowed by her older sister, but still loves her more than anything. When Cass leaves, that seems to start an avalanche of events in Caitlin's life. Exploring the very real circumstances of teen peer pressure, losing yourself in a boyfriend/girlfriend, and trying to live up to an older sibling, this book is profound in the YA world.

I found myself in tears and even with a stomach ache in many parts of this book. I had parts that I could relate to all too well and it was difficult for me to read. There were even parts I had to set the book aside for a moment to collect myself and prepare to read some more. Even though it was difficult, I had to know what would happen, and I think it's important for teens to read this and see that people WILL help if there are things that end up spiraling out of our control. That you can trust your parents. And, that even when we think someone is perfect, they have their own struggles and imperfections. We shouldn't try to live up to the image of someone else, we should just try to be the best version of ourselves that we can.
