pucksandpaperbacks 's review for:
The Kingdom
by Jess Rothenberg
Rating: 2.5
This book was sent to me by Macmillan in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Trigger warnings: pedophila, death, depression and suicide
CW: Gore (lots of blood which is graphic)
Fantasy is not the genre I normally gravitate toward, so this I don't feel like I'm confident in reviewing this title properly. The first chapter of this book intrigued me, so I thought I was going to enjoy the story a lot! However, my expectations were not met. My thoughts are that this book could've been executed differently. This is a multimedia book, so it included interviews and graphics that were crucial to the story. However, since I have an ARC of this and not the final copy, it hindered my reading experience and added to my confusion. The organization could've been better because I was confused from the I was thoroughly confused and very creeped out by the story because it involves a human + android romance? Which was super, super weird to me. I was on the verge of DNFing this, but I wanted to know how the murder mystery wrapped up. The ending was very surprising and unexpected. But, I would've liked to see the character, Mr. Casey be a villain because he was being written like one. I think this story had the potential to be successful because the world was really intricate, but it really felt short for me.
