Things That Go Bump
by Kathryn Foxfield
I feel like there have been a few horror stories recently set in IKEA-style furniture stores, but this is the first one I've seen that's aimed at children. It is admittedly a great setting for a spooky read.
There's some genuinely creepy scenes here, though overall it is more of a fun, cosy horror in the style of Dread Wood rather than the more intense tension of The House Trap.
Probably my main criticism of the book is that it did take me some time to come to care about any of the kids, which meant it was a while until I fully engaged emotionally. That said, there was some decent character work especially in the final third, and I really appreciate the anxiety representation in the novel.
