Daniel, Deconstructed by James Ramos
2.0

Overall the plot in this book really dragged. Keeping it short, despite the journey along the way it didn't feel like Daniel actually learned anything until the last chapter, and even then it's simply stated and doesn't ever feel like he actually learned it. But, different from other YA books, it doesn't end when he gets his partner. The story continues afterwards and includes how to balance friendships with a relationship, which I believe is really important to read, especially for younger people who might be entering their first relationship.

That being said, on a personal note, I really was not a fan of the wording "has autism" in this book. I know some people use different wording for themselves, but as an autistic person saying "autistic" feels so much more right than "has autism." I also was not a fan of how Gabe's gender was handled. I don't see why we needed to know their deadname, why Daniel needed to question Bridge when he called them they (even though he got it quickly when explained), why we needed a side plot of them being misgendered by the Homecoming vote, or why Daniel made flash cards for his family about Gabe. Also as a trans person, that would make me deeply uncomfortable, both with the fact that Daniel never made sure it was okay with Gabe for him to tell his parents, and the fact that there are flash cards on it, like I wouldn't be respected with a visual reminder.

Maybe this book is good for some people, but it was not good to me.
