I'll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman's Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer
by Michelle McNamara
5 stars- To be honest, I am not a true crime reader. It is actually one of my least favorite genres because I am a wimp. I don’t watch horror movies and Criminal Minds can cause me to lose nights of sleep. So when this book came out, I continued to hear the hype and ignored it. Then the police made an arrest and that completely reignited all interest in the book. I kept seeing it all over Instagram and everywhere else. Which led me to add this book to my Amazon cart that had two other books in it already.
I am happy I made the impulse buy. McNamara does a great job of taking the factual information in the case, but describing it with prose that reads like a narrative. The whole case is scary, you know since it actually has happened, but none of the details McNamara uses are there to scare you. All details are pertininent to her story telling and she never gets overly graphic-- for this I am truly thankful. The whole case is interesting and McNamara writes in a way that makes you think you are reading journal entries. Once I got into the book, I could not put it down and it made for a compelling read on the road-- especially when we had car problems and had to stop in a random town.
While the whole book gave me chills, the last few pages of the book, written by McNamara herself, gave me goosebumps. This closing proved again what a wonderful writer McNamara was. Highly recommend to those who of course love true crime, but even those who are looking to expand more into the non-fiction genre as a whole.
