In this newest novel by Yaa Gyasi, we follow one family through the years. The years are filled with stories of immigrating to Alabama from Ghana, Gifty’s faith, her brothers addiction, and struggle of opening oneself to others. Though I am not a religious person, this did not turn me off as others have mentioned. It made me feel more connected to the story and G’s journal entries made you feel her hope and pain
The story was beautifully written. I gave it 4.5 instead of five because it took a bit to get into and I honestly struggle with stream of consciousness.
