For all of the build up, I wasn't impressed. I liked jumping between characters at first, but then I realized about halfway through that I never really got to know any of the narrators truly personally. I never connected with any of them.
Then, when I finally found the actual plot (about 2/3 of the way through), there were so many twists and turns in the story that I just got uninterested. I have heard that the other books in the series are much better, so I'll keep reading, but I was pretty disappointed with this one. I think the story has a LOT of potential, and I like how original it is compared with other vampire YA, but this book left me with too many questions. Questions that the characters wouldn't ask anyone, which infuriated me.
The following contains SPOILERS:
Here are a few specific questions I have, maybe they will eventually be answered, but I feel that they should already have been:
- If there are just 400 of them, why aren't the adults freaking out more over them being killed. And if it happened in Plymouth/Roanoke too, then there aren't 400 anymore, are there? There's fewer? Never acknowledged.
- If they are continually regenerated in new bodies, why do the adults treat the teens like children? Weren't they all older or younger than one another at some point? So they should be equals? Especially with CVA dying, now is she going to be reborn and be way younger than Schuyler?
- Why isn't their ENTIRE history given to them when they go to their first Committee meeting? It seems pretty important for them all to know, and yet Schuyler was continually learning stuff about herself throughout the end of the book.
- Why is Jack so attracted to Schuyler/Schuyler's mom when he is "blood bound" to Mimi?
- Why do the characters believe EVERY WORD ANYONE EVER SAYS TO THEM? I was shocked when they saw Charles Force's face on the demon thing and then when he was like, "nope, wasn't me." They were all, "oh, ok then, it must have been Dylan the whole time."
- ......yes, those are the main questions, although I have many more.
